5 Marketing Mistakes Small Business Owners Are Making (And How to Fix Them)

If you’re running a small business, you’re probably wearing every hat—from operations to marketing. It’s easy to pour your time and budget into things that don’t actually move the needle.

Whether you’re growing a storefront, service-based business, or online shop, these five marketing mistakes are surprisingly common and totally fixable.

1. Spending Time on Social Media Without a Clear Goal

Social media can be a great way to connect with customers, but posting just to “stay active” rarely pays off. Many businesses get stuck trying to please the algorithm instead of building real strategy.

Fix it:
Pick one or two clear goals. Are you trying to increase brand awareness? Build your email list? Drive foot traffic? Then focus your content around that goal.

(Bonus: You don’t need to be on every platform—just the ones your audience actually uses.)

2. Overlooking Email Marketing

Email might not feel shiny or new, but it still delivers the best return on investment of any marketing channel. According to HubSpot, email generates about $36 for every $1 spent. Yet many small businesses either don’t have a list—or don’t use it.

Fix it:
Start simple. Collect emails at checkout, through in-person events, or with a free resource on your website. Send one or two valuable emails each month—share product updates, practical tips, or exclusive offers. Consistency matters more than perfection.

3. Guessing What’s Working Instead of Checking the Data

You’re posting, running ads, maybe even blogging—but how do you know what’s actually working? Without data, it’s easy to waste energy on the wrong things.

Fix it:
Use tools like Google Analytics, Microsoft Clarity, or even built-in social insights to see which channels drive traffic, clicks, and sales.

If digging through data isn’t your thing, that’s okay—that’s where I come in. I help business owners find what’s working (and stop wasting time on what’s not).

4. Ignoring Local SEO and Map Listings

If you rely on local customers, your Google Business Profile is one of the most valuable free marketing tools you have. But too often, those profiles go unclaimed or outdated—and that means missing out on “near me” searches.

Fix it:
Claim and update your profile. Make sure your hours, address, and contact info are correct. Add photos, reply to reviews, and post updates regularly.

5. Trying to Market to Everyone

When you try to reach everyone, your message usually connects with no one. Broad, generic marketing doesn’t make people feel seen—and it’s easy to scroll past.

Fix it:
Get specific. Define your ideal customer—what they need, what they value, and where they spend time. Then tailor your message directly to them. The clearer your focus, the stronger your results.

The Bottom Line

Great marketing doesn’t have to be complicated—it just needs to be intentional. If you’ve made one or all of these mistakes, don’t stress. You’re not behind—you’re ready for a smarter, more focused plan.
